Curious plants: South Westland

This photo was taken along the section of State Highway 6 somewhere between Knights Point and Haast village where the road runs between the Tasman Sea and what is, let’s face it, a pretty isolated part of Westland District.

What caught my eye were the wind-sculpted hummock forms these plants had taken on. I’m guessing they may have been kanuka/ manuka and hebes, but it was pretty difficult to tell from the roadside (and the ground in between looked pretty boggy so I wasn’t chancing it). Goodness knows how old these plants were but their adaptation to their environment was second to none.
